This study developed and preliminarily tested a ten-item scale to measure low-income pet owners' commitment to keeping their companion animals, finding that while owners showed strong attachment and commitment, unexpected veterinary costs and financial burdens were the primary factors threatening that commitment and potentially leading to pet relinquishment.
